Outlaws of the Old West is developed by Virtual Basement and published by Wandering Wizard — Virtual Basement is a studio that worked on both Ark: Survival Evolved and Citadel: Forged with Fire, two other popular survival games. Thankfully this means they know a thing or two about creating this sort of environment.

In Outlaws things begin in a familiar way. You wake up in an abandoned wooden coffin as a crow is trying to peck its way through the opening. After emerging you’re in a pair of wool pajamas (at least that’s what I’m guessing you’re wearing) and left to your own devices. Naturally my first instinct is to start punching trees, as one does.

After hoarding all of the sticks, rocks, and plant fibers I can get my hands on for the first five or ten minutes I cracked open the inventory and flipped over the crafting tab. There’s a long list of items like hatchets, bows and arrows, various types of workbenches and more. Which brings us to my least favorite part of survival games: blindly poking through the crafting options until you figure out what makes what and how to get what you need or want. Outlaws of the Old West is a massively multiplayer survival MMO with a huge world, thousands of items and a modular building system. Survive the wild, build your own homestead, defeat villainous bandits and work with others to tame the Wild West. Multiple biomes and changing weather affect not only the types of resources you can harvest, but also the animals you encounter.
